Headhunters

So I haven't been laid off yet but I'm in one of the groups that has been hit hard at one of the major banks, and chances are probably 50-50 that I'll be looking for a new job in the next month. I know nothing about headhunters - can anyone recomend some good ones in NYC or elsewhere? I'm (very) open to changing locations. Btw I'm in S & T not IBD in case that matters.

Thanks.

Bonuses

I have a question about bonus distribution for IB analysts. As I understand it, there are generally 3 buckets of bonuses, and 70-80% of analysts fall into the middle bucket, with a few getting top bucket and a few getting lower bucket. My question if this is true across all groups within IBD, or if bonuses are based on revenue. For instance, does a middle-range analyst in industrials get the same bonus as a middle-range analyst in, say, health care, if industrials is the cash cow of the bank and brings in 5 times as much revenue? I know at the upper levels you get paid based on what you bring in, but it would seem a bit unfair to do this at the analyst level since you're basically doing what you are told.

NYC tax question

Hey guys,

This is kind of random but when we went through training earlier in the summer we had a presentation from some HR/benefits guy, and he was talking about some sort of exemption, rebate, or credit you can get for riding the subway to work. I was thinking that it was credited during the year (to your paycheck) instead of just when you file taxes and get your refund. Does anyone know what

Biking to work

I hate the subway. I'm looking for a place to live, and found a great place that's about 40 mins walking from work. I don't want a 40 minute walk to and from work every day, so I'm wondering if anyone bikes to work in Manhattan? I've never really paid attention to whether people ride to the office, but I see those delivery guys all the time on their bikes. Is it feasible to ride to/from work, or d

Dare I bring it up...?

I know this has been on many of our minds as things have unfolded in the markets over the past month or so and dealflow has more or less stopped. Assuming a "moderate case" scenario from here on out(ie we don't go into a recession but deal flow doesn't revert back to what it has been the past few years), how much will bonus levels drop for us analysts/associates? I know that my bank has been eating it big time lately, and we probably aren't as in bad shape as some others.

Learning excel

Hi guys,

I'm halfway through training at a BB in NY and this week we used excel for the first time. I am one of the only ones in the class who has never used excel, and I suck at it. It took me about 3 times as long to do the same stuff as the other people who had done internships or other experience using excel. We don't really have any exposure to excel to speak of during the rest of training, so my skills aren't going to get any better until training is over and I start using it every day. I don't want to start off on my desk as the "slow analyst" who can't use excel, so I'm hoping to at least improve my skills before then and master the basics. Any suggestions for tutorials or something along those lines that will help me become proficient in navigating, formatting, frequently used shortcuts, etc?

Capital markets groups

Hey guys,

I'm a new analyst in capital markets and we're getting ready to do group selection. I'm having a hard time deciding which groups I'm interested in, and I'm interested in the opinions of those of you with exposure to cap markets. Groups with most interesting work?

Best/worst hours?

Best/worst exit opportunities, to HFs or elsewhere?

Also, is it a bad idea to join a group dealing with more "obscure" products (say, a student loans group instead of something like securitizations)? Or is this not a worry since there's always going to be firms on the buyside looking for people with specific skillsets?

Recent events...

Hi guys

I haven't been paying attention to what's been happening in the markets for the past 6 weeks or so because I've been busy/preoccupied with other stuff. I checked out the WSJ today and found out that we're in the middle of a liquidity crisis and things are getting pretty scary in some places. Can anyone link to a good article/site that summarizes what has been going on and what set this stuff off? All of my normal news sources have articles that assume prior knowledge of the situation, and I can't figure out what set the whole thing off. I know people have been warning about the subprime sector for awhile now, but it looks like the market has only been performing poorly for about 5-6 days. Was there some kind of fund blow-up, macro event, or other impetus for this change, or did banks just realize how out of hand things have gotten?

Comfortable shoes...

Ok, after having worked in a BB bank for about a month I'm now confident that all the talk on here about having to drop $1000 on a suit and $500 on shoes is not true...people don't really care what you wear as long as you are neat and presentable, and there are some people who don't even meet that standard. Anyways, I have discovered that dress shoes (at least mine) are real uncomfortable when you have to wear them all day, every day, so I'm wondering what people think are the most comfortable reasonably-priced dress shoes? By reasonably-priced I mean from about $80-150 a pair, maybe slightly more. Someone at work suggested Alfani's and said they were the most comfortable shoes he's even worn so I'll probably check those out (they are cheap, too), but I figure we can compile a decent list on here as well.
