How to handle an awkward confrontation?
What if one of your superiors suspects you of interviewing at other places and confronts you about it? How would you handle it?
Also.. do you think your employers would be petty enough to fire you over such a discovery? Obviously not on the grounds that you are looking elsewhere, I'm sure they would fabricate some other BS reason.
Quiting before finding a new job?
Quiting before finding a new job... possible resume suicide? Highly suspicious / a red flag to future hiring managers? Risky / dangerous in the current state of the job market?
ok seriously guys...
how many of you currently in banking decided to pursue a career in finance because you had nothing else to do? As in, law and med school would be too tedious, no interest in pure engineering, not good enough athletically to play pro, etc. so banking was the best option. i doubt any one actually wanted to be a banker when they were ten yearsold right.
Injured Monkey
I fell out of my tree and hurt my head. But seriously,I am having major surgery soon and will be in convalescence for 2-3 months.
I recently graduated from college and have yet to land my first job. What are some things I can do when I am recovering to expand my knowledge and broaden my skill set for an analyst type of position (Hedge Fund/I-Bank)?
I read The Journal and several other publications on a daily basis. I was thinking about studying for the GMAT. Any thoughts from experienced monkeys would be appreciated.

Thoughts on check patterned shirts
I was wondering how common is it for people to wear check patterned shirts in the usual white and blue colors. I have a good number of solid shirts in the usual white, light blue, dark blue, some vertical stripes, and some patterned designs.
I know some have frowned upon check patterned shirts, but I don't plan to wear the check patterned shirts with my suit and we are business casual so I figured a nice way to change it up would be to wear a nice check patterned shirt every once in a while while still keeping with the regular colors.
SECURITIES LENDING at I Banks
Is securities lending considered to be a front office job? Is it difficult to land like IBanking or S&T? What the pay like? I met someone who is an Executive Director(securities lending) at Credit Suisse and he said that his bonus and base was over $1mm. Is there any truth to that? Please elaborate
Advice question about getting into IB
I was referred to this site less than two days ago and I've been on it ever since, devouring all of the helpful information posted by all of you on these forums. I think it's really great that you guys are so grounded and willing to help other people who share your interest in the finance industry.
I have searched these forums and have not really found anything specifically related to the question I have for you.
Underage drinking
This has been covered slightly but looking for more opinions. I'll be turning 21 during my SA stint, but wont be for the first couple weeks. I have a good fake ID (a real one that looks like me), so when is it ok to use this? From most responses, it looks ok to use when out with the group or other SA/analysts but not when at an event with HR. Can anyone provide more insight on when it is ok/not ok to use it?
Resume writing practice - city you worked in, or city based in?
If you worked on studies in like San Fran, Detroit, and Houston but were based in say Chicago or Miami, would you put the location of the study next to the resume description?
Technically you are taxed wherever you worked, I think?
Just wondering because I saw an MBB resume for PE and they had city mentioned for each of the main studies they discussed.
Soapbox: Borderline redrawn
In The Deal NewsWeekly George Casey and George Karafotias, partners at Shearman & Sterling LLP, analyze the SEC's proposed changes to cross-border M&A rules. The Securities and Exchange Commission has proposed significant changes to its cross-border M&A rules first adopted in 1999. The proposed changes, included in a May 6 release and open for public comment until June 23, represent another positive step in acknowledging the increasingly global nature of the M&A marketplace....
Questions about TMT Banking from a generalist
I'm a generalist who typically works with companies engaged in manufacturing and value-added distribution, but am interviewing at a boutique that focuses on the TMT industries next week. Anbody know of any specific resources I should check out or any items unique to TMT banking that I should be aware of (e.g., non-standard valuation techniques, etc.)?
Thanks

Contemplating Key Indicators
David Merkel submits: I figure when things are relatively quiet, it is time to start thinking about the bigger picture. Quiet? Are things quiet now? Well, sorta… we still have problems:
Goals
So Im moving to nyc on sunday and I was transferring a bunch of files to my external hard drive when i came across a file labeled "goals 2007". So i opened it and looked it over and i ended up achieving 7 of the 9 goals that I had set out for myself.
I was curious as to if anyone here has done the same and has written goals. Sure we are all motivated people atleast about our careers otherwise we wouldnt use this forum, but how many of you actually take the time to write out goals for yourself. Are there something that is just subconsciously there or do you write them down.
Sort of a strange subject but I was curious as to other users and how they handled this.
MICROFINANCE and I-BANKING
I'm a graduating senior, very interested in Investment Banking (Corporate Finance / M&A).
What do you think about spending some time in Microfinance, and then going into Investment Banking? Would that make sense? Would I develop valuable skill-sets that I-Banks would value? The reason I bring this up is that the market is bad, and I'm trying to distinguish myself in the industry. I would appreciate any feedback.
FYI I genuinely admire microfinance, i'm not simply using it as leverage for a career in i-banking, but I want to follow adequate steps - it seems like what would be more natural is to work in I-banking, Then PE/VC Firms, then and then switch over into micro-finance..

Series 3 license
1) Will putting a series 3 license on resume hurt for all non-sales jobs on the trading floor like trading, quant, etc? or will it actually help?
2) Series 3 is an individual license but do i need to park it somewhere if i am not using it?
3) Are the terms sales/broker/dealer used interchangeably for a BB for a sales position on the trading floor(unless its a separate broker shop)?
4) Do the sales people make the same amount of money as the traders in general?
Thanks
