Offers: BB Capital Markets vs. MM IBD

Probably will see a lot of these topics in the next couple of days

My friend has an offer in Capital Markets with a top bank in NYC (think GS/MS) and also one with a top tech boutique bank out in the west coast that does small IPOs (just under 100m). I don't think she likes hours of industry groups, but doesn't mind capital markets. Looking at PE or business school in the future.

First jobs in trading? Please advise.

What are the best places to start a career in trading?

I know Goldman and some other BBs get a lot of press, but what about buyside firms? What about energy companies? I suppose most people get to high-quality trading hedge funds after a BB stint, but what other paths are well-regarded (if any)?

Help with top media PE firms - MM and large-cap

Which PE firms, both MM and/or large-cap, would you consider the best-performing in the media/entertainment sectors specifically?

I'd consider Providence Equity #1. I'd put Apax in top 10, maybe top 5.

Does anybody have thoughts on this? List IRR or MoM of the funds (or ball-park) if you have them.

Thanks.

Lazard M&A vs. BB M&A

What are the pros/cons of doing Lazard M&A as opposed to a BB M&A (ML, Citi, CS)? My feeling is that you would see more different kinds of deals at a BB but would end up being a model monkey. At Lazard, you would see less types of deals but have a more intuitive feel for each transaction.

IBD to Trading

Just wondering if its possible to, after your analyst stint in the corporate finance side of investment banking, to swith into the trading side? I know they're not directly related, but if you can't get into trading out of college and you can get into IBD, would your first years there be a good stepping stone to trading?

Specific ER questions

Hi. I stumbled into this forum from one of ratul's posts about bonuses and ended up reading the_inscrutable_chicken's thread about ER. I'm trying to decide which will fit me best - IBD, S&T or ER. Hope some of you ER veterans can help with these questions.

Asset Management in the Southeast

I go to a semi-target MBA program, and I'm looking to get into asset management.

Which firms are some good ones to look into in the Florida and Georgia area?

Thanks

Target School

Oliver Wyman (Financial Services)

Hey guys, I'm asking this for a friend

What is the general reputation of Oliver Wyman Financial Services? How do the exit opps compare to ibanking at a NYC boutique? Also, what's the travel like? What percentage of time do you spend out of NYC?

Thanks

Centerview Partners

Hey guys, I'm asking this for a friend

Does anyone how Centerview is perceived on the Street? What are the hours like? How is the culture?

Thanks

Interviewing again with a group that didn't give you an offer

I interviewed with these two firms for an internship position during the summer after my sophomore year. I didn't get offers but I might be able to interview with those same groups again for an internship during my junior summer.

Would they ask me the same interview questions that they did the first time around? Or would the interview differ a lot from the first one?

MS Menlo Park

Anyone know the size of the tech group? How it's divided?

Fed Announces: 25 BPS Cut

Any thoughts on how this is going to affect the current economy issues?

The importance of networking

I just wanted to offer some friendly advice to all non-targets on the board. This is in no way an attempt to start a target versus non-target debate, but to tell a success story. I go to a non target, had no internship experience, and ended up getting offers from two reputable firms.

Lazard Capital Markets

-anybody know anything about it?

Lunch Interviews

As part of my Lehman Superday on Friday 2 analysts will be taking me to lunch.

I realize that this is still VERY much a part of the interview process, but what specific tips do you guys have? What should I order? I don't want to get anything messy nor do I want to get the most expensive item on the menu. What other little codes of conduct are there for these types of lunch interviews?

GETCO - has anyone heard of this firm?

They're recruiting very aggressively at Stanford. Google search reveals it to be yet another
high frequency prop-trading firm. Does anyone have knowledge of this firm's reputation/pay/opportunity etc. ?

Lies about bonuses

Just curious (and believe what you want, but no this is not relevant to me):

Do people lie about there bonuses in PE and HF interviews? Do the shops call to confirm? And do the banks rat the guys out if they are lieing?

Anyone see this video?

One of the funniest things I've seen in a while.

Advice

Hey guys, recruiting season has come and gone and I didn't get a job. I didn't make it to the final round for RJ and that was basically the only good job at career fair (I still interviewed for several jobs but in the end didn't take any). I am searching through many sites and trying to make connections to get a job.

lied about summer offer

I had an interview w/ a BB, and they asked me if I had a summer offer. I lied and told them yes, but I didn't want to go back for reasons X,Y, and Z. The reason i did this is b/c ive been dinged by everyone i told the truth to. The truth is that the place I interned at (small shop, not in NYC) hired less than 20% and wouldn't give me a reason. I received good reviews.

How does a sophomore apply for a summer internship?

I'm a sophomore at a target. The problem is, all the on-campus resume drops for summer positions stipulate that you must be a junior (so I can't submit a resume). But I know BB firms DO hire good enough sophomores. So how do I apply to them?

On a related note, how the heck does one apply for a sophomore rotational program at one of the big banks?

regional vs large offices M/B/B

what is the difference between working at M/B/B in a regional office vs a large office (NYC, SF, Boston), in terms of the work and exit opps?

Goldman email server

For instance would it be:

lblankfein@goldman.com or
