Putting new internship on the resume

So I will be applying for an entry-level IBD job this fall, and I recently accepted an offer to intern at an independent research firm over the fall. As this will be my only real finance experience before I graduate, it is kind of important to emphasize. However, describing it on my resume will be hard, since I don't actually start the internship until late September (banks recruit at my semi-target~target in October).

Book Review

I was wondering if anyone has read "The Business of Investment Banking" by K. Thomas Liaw and how useful it would be for a college senior starting to interview soon.

VC Books

What are some good books about the VC industry? Are there VC book equivalents to Ibanking books like Monkey Business or Liar's Poker?

what should a job like this range in terms of pay????

Using People

Hey guys, first post here.

I have a few personal connections to BB analysts... And by that I mean friends of friends and old classmates, but definitely not buddies. Anyway, my question is: do you think it's worth it to ask them to pass my resume on? Does an analyst have any pull at all when it comes to scoring an interview? How about random alumni?

Bonuses

I have a question about bonus distribution for IB analysts. As I understand it, there are generally 3 buckets of bonuses, and 70-80% of analysts fall into the middle bucket, with a few getting top bucket and a few getting lower bucket. My question if this is true across all groups within IBD, or if bonuses are based on revenue. For instance, does a middle-range analyst in industrials get the same bonus as a middle-range analyst in, say, health care, if industrials is the cash cow of the bank and brings in 5 times as much revenue? I know at the upper levels you get paid based on what you bring in, but it would seem a bit unfair to do this at the analyst level since you're basically doing what you are told.

Starting Salary

I was wondering if all first year analysts get the same salary or someone who did double major and varsity athletics is likely to get a bigger salary than someone with a history major?

Good books to learn investment banking

Could anyone suggest a good text that one can learn some basics about investment banking from? I dont mean novels like Liars Poker or Monkey Business, nor prep classes like Dealmaven, but rather just straight up educational texts. Thanks for any input.

"Banks set to cut 10-15% of staff as markets take toll on revenues"

To intern or not to intern during the year?

With no prior finance experience, but a good GPA (3.6) from a top target school with a degree in Economics, how important is it to work somewhere part time during the school year if the goal is to get a S&T internship at a BB next summer?

I'm going into my junior year. I didn't get any offers for my sophomore summer and I'm kind of nervous going in to my junior summer recruiting period. Is it much easier?

question about resumes

Hi guys,

I summered in IBD at a BB and received an offer to return for full-time. I am interested in applying for a few other positions before accepting the offer, so I need to update my resume. My question is this: should I explicitly list on my resume / cover letters that I received a full-time offer from the BB? Something along the lines of "offered full-time position"?

Would greatly appreciate any help.

need to know macros ??

I"m good at excel, but know very little (or none) of macro.
Do IB analysts really need to know it ?

what about analysts in other divisions : finance, operations,... ?? Do they need to know it too ?

Just curious, what are the S&T exit strategy?

LBO/Sec 338

Is it common practice to use a reverse subsidiary cash merger structure for LBO's between target, merger "sub", and sponsor-group "parent"?

By just looking at published preliminary proxies, there doesn't seem to be a commonly used tax structure. What's the safest practice? I know they're taxable stock purchases, but could they also be using section 338 elections to step up the target's assets?

newb question about prop trading

so I've heard prop trading can be highly lucrative but I really don't know what it is

Middle Market Shops

Can anyone speak from experience in regards to deal flow, quality of life, compensation, managers, and any other relevant information about the following shops:

Brown, Gibbons, Lang & Co.
Harris Williams & Co.
Edgeview Partners
Lincoln International
Stout Risius Ross

I have already looked for info using the search function but did not come up with any first-hand accounts or other substantive information.

Fortune 500

I've been on hunt for a year now, and it's becoming quite apparent that I'm wasting away by not gaining relevant experience. An MD recently recommended I go to industry first, given the current state of hiring on wall st.

Can anyone who's been through it hash out the career track for a jr guy starting at a fortune 500. How hard is it to eventually come back for a finance job, how hard to get into a top b-school, etc.
