Investment Banking in the EMEA (europe/middle east/africa) Regions
Can anyone comment on how the different ibanks are positioning themselves in those markets? IE are they trying to expand ibanking, specifically in the middle east region? What would be the progression? Work in NYC or London first, and then be moved there? how would you articulate your desire to do so in an interview in nyc?
Merrill Lynch Global Markets
I have a 2nd round interview with ML Global Markets in the next week in NYC. I already had a 1st round interview and now I am interviewing with a specific group, the usual 6 interviews in 3 hours routine. Has anyone here interviewed with ML before? Is the 2nd round considered the final round? If I am meeting with a specific group already, isn't this the final round?
Corporate Development
I want to see if anyone can share some real life information on corporate development opportunities post-IB. Real information defined as career progression timeline, salary, responsibilities, etc. First hand knowledge would be most appreciated. Thanks!
which one
would one take? an s&t offer or an offer in banking at a place like csfb or ubs (likely to work in their ecm or dcm group)

Back-office work
I'm trying to break into the trading field, and I wanted to know what the back-office people do, how much they are paid, etc. (How much it sucks?) Is that the typical place to start Ugrad?
I'm considering southern CT area. Thanks.
Double Major: Is it Worth It?
Is a double major in econ and finance better than just a degree in finance? Do IBD's like to see this or is it just a waste of money? Does it help my chances of landing a gig? Thanks!
stupid choice?
Would one be stupid for taking Deutsche Bank over Lehman (for ibd/capital markets?) or Credit Suisse (S&T) over both?
Macquarie
Hi, this is my first post...
Macquarie seems to be a pretty red-hot place these days w/ all the infrastructure mandate they've been winning recently (cf Thames Water
Current/Former S&T - how to switch bank after year 1?
anyone know how it has been done? yes, you apply, but how? and how easy/difficult is it? thank you for your input
does first year matter much?
Do you guys think first year will matter too much in terms of your gpa and what you did in school when it comes down to getting that Ibanking job or internship?? I pretty much bombed my first few tests as a direct result of too much partying and because I have a part time job.
How long do you have until you have to Reply to offers?
If not specified in the offer letter, when given an offer, how long do you have until you have to reply yes/no?
2 weeks?
3 days?
Where are the best opportunities for an older, non-finance background job-seeker?
I'm 26, working in private equity fund formation at a top law firm, have a BA in English from a top college, and looking to break into finance. Obviously I'm a little old, and don't have an ideal background ... that being said, what might be some of the most fruitful areas to explore: trading? analyst? BB? boutique? hedge fund?
I know that it's the path less-traveled, but I also know I'm not the first to try it.
Haas
How does Berkeley's HAAS compare for landing an IB job post MBA? Would they be considered a top 5? 10?
Furthermore, if you are interested in HF/PE fields, which business school are best to target?
Finally, how does working as a junior analyst at a small HF look for MBA apps?
thanks
Different PE firms, what do people think of them? Have you worked at any of these?
Blackstone
Carlyle
Oak Hill
TPG
Tomas Weisel
Or any other firms people would like to share comments about?
Sounding Scripted in Interviews?
Obviously you prepare a good deal, but how can one avoid sounding scripted during superdays?
thanks!
Is investment banking the single highest paying salaried job out there?
Are there any occupations that pay as well?
When to apply as a recent graduate
Hello. I was a recent graduate in June 2006. I spent my summer (and part of my fall) traveling / doing community service, and working a part-time job (just to bring in extra cash). I was a competitive student athlete (division 1 level) and an economics major, however I knew I wanted to break into the investment banking world at some point. Over the past few weeks I have been sending out many applications to various banks for entry-level analyst positions starting in the summer of 2007.
Lazard / Wasserstein vs. BBs
I came across this article on Lazard and its transformations since Wasserstein has taken over.
Bruce Wasserstein is trying to be diplomatic -- really he is -- as he compares Lazard Ltd. (LAZ ), the storied investment bank that he runs, with Wall Street giants like Goldman Sachs (GS ), Merrill Lynch, and JPMorgan Chase (JPM ). But tact does not come naturally to Wasserstein, the preeminent merger-and-acquisition tactician of the rough-and-tumble 1980s.
For those in IBD: How IBD Changes Us...
There was a point in my life when I wasn't like this, but life as a monkey has made me completely intolerant of:
A) Misspelled words in emails, etc.
B) When sh*t isn't justified in Word.
C) When things aren't formatted correctly and look like crap.
For instance, random people on this forum message me asking for "advice", but when they misspell words and their grammar is completely in the sh*thole, that pisses me off.
I'm a bit confused... is it possible to work your way up the banks to a BB?
Assuming a "BB" is what I think it is (the iconic investment banks, ie: Sachs) do people get jobs at smaller less prestigious banks (What I seem to gather are Botiques, middle market, etc) and eventually work their way up to the BB's?
I'm trying to figure out if investment banking is a legitimate career goal, or more like a 13 year old deciding he wants to be a rockstar. I'm in a good academic situation, but I just can't live with the idea that there is no "plan B" for any given career path that I want to put all of my time and energy into pursuing.
